RE-LUXOED is a revolutionary lighting concept using state of the art materials and technology. Photosynthetic and heliotropic floral behaviors served as design drivers for this specific lamp. RELUXOED then has a diurnal mentality; it assumes a charge cycle pose during the day, and a discharge cycle pose at night. As a result, zero ‘from the grid’ electricity is required to power this ultra compact desk light.

Its usage is simple:

1. During the day, stick the closed lamp to any window. Thin film solar sheets embedded in the silicone suction cups will charge an array of microbatteries. Boost converters allow voltage to be stepped up, or amplified, to power the OLED lighting elements.

2. At night, simply remove the fixture from the window and reattach it to any surface: a desk, the back of your computer, the wall.

3. Press anywhere on the OLED array and the light transforms into its discharge pose. An armature actuated by spring loaded and gas struts unfurls, while the boost converters are switched on and activate the light itself. An embedded photometric light sensor monitors the ambient light conditions, and adjusts the light output accordingly to preserve battery life, and provide the most balanced and pleasing light quality.

Barchan bench was designed, manufactured, produced, and assembled in 1 week by a team of 10 composed of 6 undergraduate and 4 graduate students for the 2009 Architecture Week Exhibition. As Team Leader, I emphasized the importance of team work throughout all stages of design. In the end the collaboration between the students yielded a successful design project which is now exhibited in the Tulane School of Architecture’s Main Lobby.

[a] this project studies algorithmic procedures and its iterative capabilities to produce differentiation
at a multitude of scales. rhinoscript is used to establish a network of points which operate localy in
order to define a global system.

[b] a secondary system consisting of a landscape component was generated using a combination of both explicit and code[d] procedures. a combination of edge work filters influenced by the transients (frequency) of an audio file were used to create a displacement image. The line work was then oscillated based on a sine wave which created the dynamic effects.

A fabricated landscape of cones finds its origins in the ambient sounds of New Orleans. This site specific installation emphasizes the transformation of invisible sound bands and frequencies into an atmosphere landscape made of material and color. The sculptural topography, intricately fabricated from individual pieces, is made of 300 CNC milled acrylic plates that are folded to create cylindrical cells snapped together with 10,000 rivets. Each cell, unique in diameter and height, creates an intriguing visual surface reminiscent of geological or biological surfaces.
Sounds augment the dimension of public space, linking geography with human activity. Our proposal reinterprets the traditional relationship of sound defined by physical space. Rather, the installation offers new spatial possibilities as sound acts as a generator for transforming matter into a complex spatial topography otherwise invisible to the naked eye.

failure[s] ;

*Failure refers to the state or condition of not meeting a desirable or intended objective, and may be viewed as the opposite of success.

*wikipedia
Failure Types;

1 _ Failure to anticipate
2 _ Failure to perceive

we [design team] failed to anticipate the rigidity of the material in our initial explorations. this not only affected time but also connection between cones. For example, we initially expected each cone to require one person 2 minutes to rivet the cone[s], it ended up taking 2 people five minutes to assemble each cone. Secondly we failed to understand the difficulty in orienting each cone based on the immediate neighbor. Since we only code[d] the location and generation of each cone we knew the location but not the orientation and connection angle to each neighbor.

The failure in this sense was the transition between the digital and physical constraints.

Urban Concept
More than a collection of buildings, this project is a city. It is massive in scale, and must be dealt with on an infrastructural level, but it must also create pedestrian scale spaces which will draw visitors from Shenyang, Beijing, and beyond. The site is located at the confluence of the Hunhe River and a smaller canal branching off to the south, at the tip of the Changbaixiang District Development. This location will be both a gateway to the district as it develops, as well as a cultural anchor point.
As a gateway, our design is densified to the eastern part of the site, leaving the western part open for future development. It is our belief that the new CCTV project will generate massive commercial interest and will require space not only for its own expansion, but for the development of support buildings such as a five-star hotel for film and television stars. Densifying the site enables the creation of an intimate space similar to Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy, renowned for its perfect pedestrian scale. Densification also massively reduces the footprint of the CCTV development, making it more ecological.
The complex is organized around a public square (CCTV Square), defined by soft, flowing architectural surfaces with large figural transparent openings. The space includes water features with aquatic plants, fountains, bridges, and grand entries into each building. During the daytime, the square will be a relaxation space for CCTV personnel, as well as a tourist destination for people who want to shop, go to movies or museums, or go on a tour of the CCTV production facilities.
At night, the space will transform into a glamorous 'Space of the Stars' for hosting special events, press conferences, and live television shooting. LED lights embedded in the soft surfaces will glow red like a giant red carpet, welcoming guests into the future of television. This effect will be visible from the center of Shenyang City as well as from the air.

Building Descriptions
I. TV and Media Tower
This 160 meter tower is south-facing and is located to the north side of the site. It houses office space, conference space, libraries, a gym, and restaurants. It is located adjacent to the Media Operations center in order to facilitate communication between these related functions.

II. Art and Performance Center
This group of functions has been distributed throughout our design in order to create different lively areas around CCTV Square. It also helps to alleviate crowding when performances overlap. The 20,000 seat Multifunctional Arena is located at the western tip of the site. This arena has fixed and removable seating to allow for maximum flexibility of use, from NBA games, to rock concerts, to Disney on Ice. It includes a VIP box seating area at mid-level. The 1,600 seat Performing Arts Theater and the 500 seat Small Theater are located across from the Multifunctional Arena and also entered from CCTV Square.

III. Motion Picture Museum
This museum will feature video projections, Chinese movie memorabilia, and appearances from Chinese movie stars. It is located below the Movie Theaters so that it can host special events there.

IV. Media Operations Center
This building is located at the base of the TV Tower and can be entered from the Tower or from CCTV Square. It will house real-time production of television shows, high-tech production technology, and space for international conferences.

V. Retail
The retail is located underground and accessed through three figural cuts in the ground. People will be able to move freely between the ground level and the shopping levels, making the Square fully three-dimensional. Enclosing the shopping makes it attractive in all seasons and during inclement weather.

VI. Hotel/ Apartments
This building is located to the south of the site, facing the Hunhe River. It is lower than the TV Tower according to the zoning plan of the area. It features several sizes of rooms, enclosed 'winter-garden' balconies within a double-skin construction, and a roof garden.

VII. Civic Sports Center/ Community Center
This building, with views of the River, features swimming, basketball, and volleyball on the ground level, and spaces requiring less ceiling height on upper levels.

VIII. Military Police Station
This building is located near the main entry to CCTV Square for security reasons. It will be the headquarters for general security of all buildings in the complex in order to avoid redundancy. Special care will be taken to prepare for the protection of VIPs and government officials in case of emergency.

IX. Parking
Parking will be located below ground on three levels in order to reserve the space at ground level for pedestrians. Buses will unload at the main drop-off zone and park at ground level at the rear of the site.

The main entry of the building is located both towards the Wanghua South Street and the new University development planned to the South. The lobby is a grand public space which can serve both as a foyer and circulation space as well as a space for events. A grand stair leads people up from ground level to the mezzanine level where they can enter the arena through four separate entrances. Bridges connect the mezzanine level to three special functions in the building located in three volumetric spaces. The volumes house a Banquet Hall, a Spa, and a VIP lounge. Openings in these volumes allow for views out to the University and City.
The exterior skin of the building is created by tucking the volumes between the skins of the Arena Box. Their curvilinearity blends into the box geometry, as if pushing through a rubber sheet. The interior surface of the Lobby similarly blends the shapes of the volumes into the interior walls and ceilings.
The figural cuts in the building envelope create a lively, three dimensional topography which opens the building up to the city of Shenyang. Gradients of solar panels, tied to inflections in the soft skin, add to the formal coherence of the building but also generate energy. The solar system is intended to power the lighting systems of the building and reduce long term running costs.
The building is based on similar arena precedents and will house 3000 fixed seats and 2000 removable seats. It is designed for maximum flexibility to allow for both highly specialized activities such as Judo events for the National Games, and also for all kinds of other University sporting events as well as public performances. The fixed seating is located above the mezzanine level and the flex-seating is below. The flex-seating is designed to fold into the walls of the mezzanine, converting a 51m x 31m game-space into a 64m x 44m gymnasium space.
The arena seatings, pitches, and supporting areas are based on International Judo Federation Rules as well as Chinese National Games rules.

At 1,500 rooms, this hotel will be the largest hotel in Beijing. It is located near the Beijing International Airport in the 5th Ring, and will be used to host international confer-ences. The building is 303 meters long and is intended to become a major landmark, visible to landing aircraft. The building is organized around three volumetric rings fused together by surfaces draped from the top and bottom. The rings create atriums which are enclosed by ETFE domes, housing a 10,000 m2 interior rainforest as well as the conference center and hotel amenities. Rooms, radiating out along each ring, are oriented both outwards and inwards, creating views out to the city as well as down into the rainforest. The droop of the rings towards the perimeter of the building also allows views outward from the interiors of the rings. Structural bays are flexible and can be broken down into standard, business suite, and presidential types. A sky restaurant is located at the highest level of the building, with views out to the city in all directions. The enclosure of the building is a double skin system where the outer layer is a weather break and the inner layer is the weatherproof enclosure. This creates a thermal buffer zone as well as the freedom to design a freeform pattern of apertures unrelated to the relentless horizontality of the hotel floor plates. The outer skin is supported by a lightweight cable-net structure which is stabilized by large tension rings affixed at the top and perimeter of the building. The skin is also embedded with a second system of solar thermal pipes and grey water capture grooves which hybridizes the base diamond pattern with a sporadic weav-ing pattern. Driven by EMERGENT’s long-time interest in complex biological systems, structure, skin, and thermal systems are interwoven in such a way that they cannot be reduced back to their parts.
